Mowa zależna - Reported speech
Mowy zależnej używamy w momencie, gdy chcemy przekazać co ktoś powiedział:
She said (that) she was waiting for her boyfriend. - Powiedziała, że czekała na swojego chłopaka.
W powyższym zdaniu słowa nie zostały przytoczone wprost - dokładnie jakby uczynił ów czekający.
W zdaniu tym została użyta mowa zależna, która w zasadzie różni się od mowy niezależnej (Direct speech) tym, że słowa nie są "wyjęte z ust mówcy" - cytowane, tylko najczęściej oprawione - On/Ona powiedział/ła, że ...
BUDOWA:
Zdanie w mowie zależnej składa się ze zdania głównego i zdania podrzędnego. W zdaniu głównym orzeczeniem są czasowniki wprowadzające: say, tell itp.

Przy zamianie zdań z mowy niezależnej na zależną w języku angielskim występuje następstwo czasów, tzn. zdanie, które w mowie niezależnej występuje np. w czasie present simple, w mowie zależnej przytoczymy je w past simple (o jedne czas "niżej").

Be going to I’m going to visit my mother this afternoon. |
Was/were going to He said (that) he was going to visit his mother that afternoon. |
1st conditional If I catch the bus, I will be home by 4 p.m. |
2nd conditional He said (that) if he caught the bus he would be home by 4 p.m. |
Słowo that znajduje się w nawiasach ponieważ jest często opuszczane po czasownikach wprowadzających - say, tell, itp., w zdaniach twierdzących i wykrzyknikowych.
Następstwa czasów nie musimy stosować jeżeli relacjonowana wypowiedź dotyczy stanu, który nie uległ zmianie, bądź też są to aktualne opinie.
John: I'm thirsty.
John said that he is thirsty.
Dotycz to także niezmiennych praw i twierdzeń.
Copernicus: The Earth goes round the Sun.
Copernicus said (that) the Earth goes round the Sun.
Nastepstwa czasów nie stosujemy także jeżeli czasowniki wprowadzające mowę zależną występują w czasach Present Simple, Present Perfect lub Future Simple.
Jack: I love Mary.
Jack has said that he loves Mary.
